Card Payments in Kenya

Definition

Card Payments in Kenya refer to the use of debit and credit cards—such as Visa, Mastercard, and some international prepaid cards—to pay for goods and services within the country. These payments may be processed through point‑of‑sale terminals in hotels, lodges, shops, and restaurants, or used to make secure online bookings before and during your trip.

In major urban centres like Nairobi and in many established safari lodges, card acceptance is common, particularly for larger expenses including accommodation, park fees handled by operators, and organized activities. Smaller shops, local markets, fuel stations in remote areas, and some park gates may still prefer cash or mobile money, so a mixed payment approach is advisable.

Banks in Kenya generally use chip‑and‑PIN or contactless technology, and transactions are usually carried out in Kenyan shillings, with your home bank applying its own exchange rate and any relevant international fees. Connectivity issues, system outages, or individual merchant policies can occasionally interrupt card processing, making it useful to have a backup payment method available.

Before travelling, visitors should inform their bank of their itinerary to reduce the risk of security blocks and check whether foreign transaction or ATM withdrawal fees apply. On the ground, cards should be kept secure, and receipts reviewed carefully. When planning a safari, it is also wise to confirm in advance where card payments are accepted and where cash or alternative options will be required, especially for tipping, curios, or incidental expenses.
